World Short Course Championships: Outside Smoke; Australia’s Shayne Reese Wins Women’s 100 IM From Lane Eight With National Record

MANCHESTER, England, April 11. ANOTHER case of outside smoke occurred at the FINA World Short Course Championships as Australia's Shayne Reese won the women's 100 IM from lane eight at the event.

Reese turned in a winning time of 59.58 to surpass Brooke Hanson's Australian record of 1:00.01 set back in 2004. Reese's victory also kept the title in the hands of the Australians as Hanson had won the previous two crowns in 2004 and 2006.

"I was actually very surprised," Reese told meet organizers. "I just put my head down in the last 25m and just went for the wall and thought ‘I'll see what happens' when I turned around and saw the one, I thought, ‘are you serious'? It was a huge surprise, I'm very happy."

Finland's Hanna-Maria Seppala finished with a silver-medal winning 59.62 that clipped her national record of 59.73 set yesterday.

In a rare loss, Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry continued her astonishing meet nonetheless with a bronze-winning time of 59.77 to dip under a minute for the first time. Her previous national standard had been a 1:00.12 from yesterday.

In other action, Russia's Daria Belyakina lowered her national record of 1:01.16 from yesterday with a seventh-place 1:01.09.
