World Champs: United States Women Advance to Water Polo Championship

MONTREAL, Canada, July 27. THE United States women will defend their crown at the World Water Polo Championships. Behind three goals from Brenda Villa, the U.S. claimed a 10-8 victory over Russia on Wednesday night in a semifinal game at Parc Jean-Drapeau. The United States will face Hungary in the gold-medal match. The Hungarians topped Canada in the other semifinal, 9-7.

The world champs from 2003 in Barcelona, the U.S. women played a seesaw game with the Russians, as there were six ties. A two-time Olympian, Villa helped the United States win bronze at last summer’s Games in Athens. She’s joined on this World Champs squad by Olympic teammates Natalie Golda, Ericka Lorenz, Thalia Munro and Kelly Rulon. The meeting with Hungary is set for Friday at 2:30. Emily Feher has been playing well in goal.
