World Champs: U.S. Men Defeat Cuba for 11th Place in Water Polo Tournament

MONTREAL, Canada, July 28. THE United States men’s water polo team won its final game at the World Championships, but the squad’s finish wasn’t exactly satisfying. Actually, not at all. By virtue of a 10-6 victory over Cuba on Thursday, the U.S. earned 11th place. The team needed a top-eight finish to qualify for next year’s World Cup.

Tony Azevedo, considered one of the premier players in the world, led the United States with two goals and Jeff Powers and Adam Wright scored twice each. While the U.S. men finished well below their expectations, the United States women will play Hungary on Friday at 2:30 p.m. for the gold medal. In the semifinal round, the U.S. defeated Russia while Hungary topped Canada.
