Women’s Water Polo: ASU Swamps UC Santa Cruz, 14-0

TEMPE, Ariz., Feb. 1. THE second season of varsity water polo kicked off Saturday with Arizona State playing host to UC Santa Cruz in the Arizona State Invitational at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

Four periods and two records later, the Sun Devils came away from their season opener with a 14-0 defeat of the Banana Slugs. The 14-point margin of victory is the largest ever for ASU while goalies Lizzie Houck (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) and Kristie Meyer (Fr., Reno, Nev.) combined for the shutout, the first in the program's history.

Just 49 seconds into the game, Katie Davis (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) made her debut a solid one by finding the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Ashley Orzalli (Jr., Acampo, Calif.), with two, Tessa Wyborny
(Fr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Heather Rempfer (Fr., Lodi, Calif.) each added goals for the Sun Devils as they headed into the second period with a 5-0 lead. Rempfer's goal came from nearly eight meters out with one second showing on the clock while Orzalli's first goal and Wyborny's tally came within 45 seconds of each other.

In the second quarter, Gili Kollan (So., Kiriat Bialik, Israel), a transfer from St. Francis College in New York, scored the first of her three goals in the game, padding the lead to 6-0. Wyborny and Daya Mau (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) also added goals for an 8-0 intermission lead.

Kollan added two more goals in the third with Davis and Wyborny also notching another score to push the home teams' advantage to 12-0. Kollan and Wyborny led the team in scoring on the day with their respective hat tricks.

In the fourth and final quarter, Lauren Jacobson (So., Leauge City, Texas) and Adriane Mota (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) added one goal each to push the final to 14-0.

Houck and Meyer each made several big saves in the game to preserve the first shutout in team history. Meyer playing just the fourth quarter, made saves on several close shots, including one to her right that she tipped just enough to force it out of play.

The Sun Devils continue play later today with a 5 p.m. game against No. 16 Hartwick at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Hartwick won the first game of the day, 9-6, over No. 19 Pacific.
