Women’s NCAAS, Day 3: Kalyn Keller Breaks 21 Year-Old American Record in the 1500m Freestyle

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 20. THE team race is all but decided. It would take an act of God to deprive the Auburn Tigers of their third straight national collegiate crown. At a team meeting before this evening’s finals, the team and coaches had an emotional bonding session then marched out ready to “have fun.”

Tonight’s first final is the 1500 meters freestyle. In an earlier heat, Georgia sophomore Laura Conway busted a move, hitting the pads in 16:00.70 – a new NCAA record, breaking Cara Lane’s 16:03.59 from 2000.

But the final heat has some tough milers contending for the crown. USC freshman Kalyn Keller has to be considered the favorite. Other contenders: Florida’s Sara McLarty, Auburn’sAdrienne Binder and Virginia’s Rachael Burke and Kimi Kelly, Keller is shooting for the win as well as the 21 year-old American record of 15:50.96 by Kim Linehan.

Keller takes off and swims consistently just under Linehan’s record pace right from the start, splitting 1:03s for every 100 except the first (1:01.53), 14th (1:04.01) and last (1:02.67). At the wall, Keller – the younger sister of 2000 Olympian Klete Keller –the scoreboard reads 15:49.14 – a new American record and the second fastest time in history.

Burke is second in 15:55.27, and McLarty third in 16:01.29. But Conway’s time from the previous heat is faster and she takes the bronze.
