Women’s NCAAs, Day 2 Prelims: Stanford’s Captain (Tara) Kirk Beams Up an American Record in the 100m Breaststroke

By Phillip Whitten

100 meter breaststroke
COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 19. There are only five heats in the 100 breast, with Stanford’s Tara Kirk a strong favorite to qualify first, perhaps challenging the world record.

Heat 1. Virginia Pate, Georgia, wins in 1:0.13

Heat 2. Lizzy Bruce, North Carolina, 1:09.27.

Heat 3. Oregon State’s Birte Steven out-touches Kristen Woodring, winning in 1:07.38.

Heat 4. In perhaps a preview of the German Olympic trials, Georgia’s sarah Poewe out-touched Florida’s Vipa Bernhardt, 1:07.02 to 1:07.26

Heat 5. One stroke into this race all doubt about the winner had been erased. The only question is whether Stanford’s Tara Kirk will break the American record of 1:05.74 by Georgia’s Kristy Kowal. Kirk turns in 31.24, right on record pace, with a full body length on the field. She touches in 1:05.44, a new American and NCAA mark and the world’s second-fastest time this year.behind Aussie Leisel Jones’ WR of 1:05.09.

Look for a sub-1:05 WR in the final.

Cuts: 1:07.96 for the A final, 1:09.17 for B.
