Women’s NCAA Div. I Champs, Day 2 Finals: Descenza Wins Despite Slow Start

By Dan Mihalik

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, March 18. MARY Descenza of Georgia was the top overall seed coming into the 100 butterfly final, but a sub-par start put her in third place halfway through the race.

But the junior recovered nicely and defeated Whitney Myers of Arizona by .63 seconds, finishing with a pool record time of 52.11. Descenza’s teammate, Katie Yevak, finished in a tie for sixth place for the Bulldogs. Brooke Boncher of Richmond also finished sixth, with an identical time of 53.32.

"I've been on a couple of relays at this championship, but this is my first individual win," Descenza said. "This is a good feeling."

Candace Weiman of Florida held off freshman Caitlin Andrew of Arizona State for third place. Dana Kirk of Stanford finished in fifth place for the Cardinal and Tawnie Bethune of Auburn rounded out the top eight.
