Women’s 400 Medley Relay, Prelims Day 7: Aussies Qualify Ahead of USA in Two-Way Battle for Gold

ATHENS, August 20. THE Aussie women posted a very fast 4:01.17, only 0.67 of a second outside their national record from Pan Pacs in '02, in prelims of the 400m medley relay this morning.

The team was made up of Rooney, Hanson, Schipper and Mills. They will draw on gold medalists Petria Thomas and Jodie Henry for the final tomorrow night but it is unclear at this point why Brooke Hanson, the silver medalist in the 100m breaststroke, swam the heat rather than bronze medalist Leisel Jones.

The USA was second in 4:02.82 swimming Cope, Kirk, Komisarz and Weir. You might expect the final team to be comprised of Coughlin, Beard, Thompson, and Joyce, though no announcement on the subject has been made yet.

On form, the Germans (4:04.16), Brits (4:05.63), Chinese (4:05.97) and Japanese (4:05.99) should fight it out for the bronze.
