Women Gophers Win Two (Wisconsin Three) in Big Ten Quad Duals at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN, January 30. MINNESOTA’S women's swimming and diving completed a strong showing this weekend at the two-day Big Ten Quad Duals at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind., going 2-1.

Minnesota defeated No. 21 Purdue 192-161 and Illinois 240-143 and lost to No. 8 Wisconsin 207-146. The Gophers improved to 7-1 in dual meet action this season.

The Gophers continued a strong weekend of diving competition by taking second and third in the 3-meter event. Jessica Livingston was second with a score of 496.20 and Abbie Bowden was third with 465.15 points. Holly Jakits was Minnesota's other diver and placed ninth with a score of 348.15.

In the 400 individual medley, Kate Hardt was touched out at the wall. She took second in a time of 4:23.70, just behind Wisconsin's Andrea Wiesner (4:23.65). Sarah Solfelt placed fifth in 4:33.46 and Abby Ruess was sixth in 4:34.85.

Hardt took another second place finish in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:57.13. Wisconsin's Carly Piper, a 2004 Olympian, won the event in 4:50.66. Valerie Tukey placed sixth in a time of 4:59.75.

Sarah Perrott was the Gophers' top finisher in the 100 freestyle. She was fourth in a time of 51.66. Katy Coombe was sixth in 52.11. Katie Wind had a strong showing in the 200 backstroke, finishing third in 2:03.07 to lead the Gophers while Erin O'Neil was Minnesota's best in the 100 butterfly.

She took fourth in 57.66. Lindsey St. Martin placed seventh in the 100 fly in 58.57 while Solfelt was eighth in 58.73.

Bridget McCoy led the way for Minnesota in the 200 breaststroke, finished third in a time of 2:21.62. Mary Patrek clocked a time of 2:22.93 to finish fifth and Abby Ruess was sixth in 2:23.74.

In relay action, Minnesota took fourth in the 200 and 400 free relays. The 200 squad of Coombe, Perrott, Jennifer Hasling and Sara Vine touched the wall in 1:35.44. The 400 free relay team that consisted of Coombe, Perrott, O'Neil and Jennifer Chang, clocked a 3:28.88.

Minnesota hosts the Minnesota Challenge, Feb. 5-6, at the University Aquatic Center as a tuneup for the Big Ten Championships.
