FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., USA, July 21. THE next set of Speedo Sectional events started on Wednesday night with the Southern Zone South Sectionals in Fort Lauderdale (Fla.). This week through the weekend features five competitions while next week will include two more events. There were two Sectionals last weekend.
At the Southern Zone South meet, Jan Wolfgarten (Pine Crest) bested the field in the men’s 800-meter freestyle, as he turned in a sectional-record mark of 8:08.90. Wolfgarten had little trouble finishing ahead of Ricardo Monasterio, who clocked 8:19.49 for the Gator Swim Club. Third place went to Clay Bullock of the Clearwater Aquatics Team (8:20.88).
In the women’s 1,500 freestyle, Chelsea Franklin was the only swimmer to break the 17-minute barrier, as she touched the wall in 16:59.67. Representing the Gulf Coast Swim Team, Franklin was followed in second place by CAT’s Caitlin Warner (17:21.15). Third-place honors were secured by Claire Thompson (17:23.64) of the West Florida Lightning. The meet kicks into high gear over the next three days.
