Wisconsin vs. Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa, October 15. THE University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team hosted the Wisconsin Badgers at the first Big Ten meet of the season. The Hawkeyes fell to the Badgers 208-92.

Cubelic swam a strong 200 free race. She came up just short of the win but placed second with a collegiate best time of 1:50.94. Freshman Haley Gordon had a close race with Wisconsin in the 200 fly. She stuck with Wisconsin’s first place finisher (2:06.93) to place second with a time of 2:07.43.

Going into the first break the Hawkeyes led the Badgers 99-48.

After the break, Cubelic finished second in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.57. The meet continued with the 200 breast, where Wartalowicz claimed second-place (2:21.99). Tour swam a season best time of 56.19 in the 100 fly.

The Iowa divers had their first competition of the season against the Badgers. On the 1-meter boards senior Deidre Freeman claimed the top spot with a score of 270.97. Junior Veronica Rydze came in second with a score of 266.70. Hawkeye newcomer Lauren Kelba placed fourth in the event (234.15) while sophomore Mary Sue LeMay finished in fifth (214.35).

In the 3-meter diving event the Hawkeyes took the top two sports. Rydze finished first in the event with a score of 291.57 and Freeman came in right behind Rydze for second-place with a score of 287.40. Kelba finished fifth (212.92) while Lemay finished in seventh (180.97).

The Hawkeyes concluded the meet with the 400 free relay. The team of Cubelic, Freshmen Elise Borja, and Emily Christiansen and Tour finished third with a time of 3:30.18.

“We are getting there but we still have a lot of work to do,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “We are still putting together championship caliber teams. Both the men and women’s teams are coming together and training hard. It was our first Big Ten meet and it was a fun crowd and that always energizes our swimmers. We go on the road next week and they need to carry on that momentum without a home crowd.”

Iowa will return to action Oct. 22 when the team travels to Michigan State. The event will start at 5 p.m. (CT)
