Wisconsin vs. Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona, November 5. THE Arizona swimming and diving program, led by a few standout performances, overwhelmed Wisconsin to win the dual meet on both the men’s and women’s sides. The UA men won 187-74 while the women topped the Badgers, 158-104.

Junior Alyssa Anderson and freshman Margo Geer each won three events on the women’s side. Anderson showed off her distance abilities, claiming the 500 and 1,000 freestyle and 400 I.M. races. Anderson’s 4:48.74 in the 500 free was good for an NCAA consideration cut time.

Geer, UA’s other three-event winner on the women’s side, was on fire Friday, posting three NCAA ‘B’ cut times in her wins in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events. Geer won the 200 free in 1:49.21, the 100 free in 49.30 and the 50 free in 22.75. The freshman was also instrumental in the UA women’s 200 free relay win, splitting a 22.79 to lead off the relay.

In the 200 fly, freshman Ashley Evans won her first collegiate event, taking first place with a 2:02.44. For the women’s 100 fly, senior Dana Christ posted the fastest time with a 55.36 to out-touch Wisconsin’s Rebecka Palm.

Over on the men’s side, Matt Barber, Carl Mickelson and Cory Chitwood each won two events as the Cats rolled up on the Badgers.

Barber took home both the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events and finished fourth in the 200 fly. The freshman from Texas won the 500 free in 4:37.40 and 1,000 free in 9:35.10.

Chitwood, the reigning NCAA champ in the 200 back, took that event in 1:48.10, while also winning the 200 freestyle in 1:40.19. Chitwood got his third win of the afternoon on the leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay.

Mickelson, after missing the UNLV dual meet, won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with times of 56.24 and 2:01.53.

Tomorrow, Wisconsin and Arizona will swim in a few broken relay competitions similar to what UA swam against UNLV and ASU. Next week, the swimmers will head to Los Angeles to face USC and UCLA.
