MADISON, Wis. – Yuri Suguiyama completed the coaching staff for his first season with the Wisconsin swimming and diving program on Thursday, hiring Erik Posegay to serve as an assistant coach.

Posegay brings a wealth of experience to the Badgers, with his career spanning all levels of the sport. In his most recent assignment, Posegay spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Penn State.

“Whether it’s been club, college, domestic or international swimming, Erik has helped athletes achieve tremendous success at every level in our sport,” Suguiyama said. “His demeanor, work ethic, experience and character add some steel to our program and fit perfectly with what the Badgers are all about.

“We welcome Erik, Stevie, Avery and Olivia to Madison with open, and excited, arms.”

“I’m excited for the opportunity that I have to be able to come to Wisconsin,” Posegay said. “I firmly believe these are exciting times ahead. I really feel strongly about what we have in place and where we can go with it. The athletic department as a whole, with the support that we get, I know we can develop kids in the pool and develop them for life. It was a total package for me.”

Prior to joining the college coaching ranks at Penn State, Posegay spent five years at the famed North Baltimore Aquatic Club (NBAC). Initially hired as an assistant under Bob Bowman – best known for developing Olympic great Michael Phelps – Posegay was promoted to head coach and CEO of the club in 2015.

In international competition, Posegay has held three coaching positions with USA Swimming, serving as an assistant women’s coach for the 2015 Open Water World Championships, 2013 Duel in the Pool and 2010 Junior Pan Pacific Championships.

He also has served as an assistant coach for the French Federation at the 2014 European Championships and as Macedonia’s head coach for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Before he joined the NBAC staff, Posegay spent six years as head coach at Parkland High School and Parkland Aquatic Club in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He guided the Parkland girls’ team to the Class 3A high school state championship in 2006.

Posegay joins Kristy Brager and Jennah Haney as newcomers named to Suguiyama’s first staff. They are joined by returning assistant coach Neil Caskey and diving coach Anton Slobounov.
