Wisconsin-Milwaukee Women’s Swimming Announces New Recruiting Class

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin, June 13. THE University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming and diving team has announced the addition of six student-athletes who will compete next season for the Panthers.

UWM head coach Erica Janssen announced today that Maggi Beck of Minot, N.D., Andrea Chvatal of Eagan, Minn., Madeline King of Madison, Wis., Karmyn Vandewettering of DeForest, Wis., Trinity Whitney of Eau Claire, Wis., and Ashley Yanzsa of West Chester, Ohio, will all enroll at UWM and participate next season.

Beck swam for Minot High School in North Dakota, winning a state title in each of her seasons on the team. The West Region Senior Athlete of the Year, she won state titles in the 100 backstroke as a junior and in the 100 back and 200 IM as a senior. In addition, she was a member of the state-champion 200 medley relay team each season, setting the state record as a senior. Beck was a five-year all-conference and all-state selection, earned All-American status in three events and was named MVP of her team on two occasions. She also holds the state record in the 400 IM.

"Maggi is an outstanding student and athlete," Janssen said. "We will look to Maggi to swim butterfly and backstroke events with the graduation of Molly Finn. Maggi is very versatile and will be used to aid in filling in depleted areas of our lineup."

Chvatal swam as a prep at Eastview High School, qualifying for the state meet two seasons. She earned All-American consideration in the 100 backstroke as a senior, placing 10th in the 100 back at state while also swimming in the 50 freestyle at the championship meet. She was also an all-conference selection in both the 100 back and 50 free.

"Andrea will help the backstroke group tremendously," Janssen said. "She will swim backstroke and sprint freestyle events and will compete for relay spots immediately. She has been improving a great deal recently and will become a great college swimmer."
King swam as a prep at Madison East High School, winning a team state championship in 2007 and finishing runner-up in 2008. The state qualifier in the 100 breaststroke was a four-year letterwinner and earned all-state honors in the 200 medley relay as a senior.

"Madeline will swim breaststroke for us," Janssen said. "She will help with the graduation of Kerry Rossow in a year. We look to make big improvements her freshman year."

Vandewettering led her DeForest High School team to three state titles in her career. A state qualifier in four events, she earned all-state honors in the 200 freestyle and as a member of the 200 and 400 free relay teams. In addition, she has been selected as a DeForest Times Tribune Honor Athlete and a junior national qualifier in 2009 in the 200 and 800 freestyle relays.

"Karmyn will swim mid-distance and distance events for us," Janssen said. "She hasn't been swimming very long and will look to make big strides her first year. We see her as a very talented swimmer who will flourish in the right program."

Whitney swam at Eau Claire Memorial High School, leading her team to four-straight conference titles and two sectional titles. The four-year state qualifier was an all-conference swimmer each season, winning conference titles in the 100 butterfly and with two relay teams as a senior. The four-year letterwinner also swims for the Eau Claire YMCA Marlins, where she was a national qualifier in the 100 fly, 200 medley and freestyle relays and the 400 medley and free relays.

"Trinity will swim butterfly for us and look to make an immediate impact," Janssen said. "She will be looking to make improvements her freshman year to help the butterfly group."
