Wisconsin-Milwaukee Wins Stevens Point Border Battle

STEVENS POINT, Wisconsin, November 11. THE University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee had contributions from across the board in winning six events and taking second in five more to win the Stevens Point Border Battle for the fourth-straight time Saturday.

Milwaukee won the two-day, three-session meet with 983 points, well in front of Northern Michigan, who was second at 818 points. The host Pointers took fifth at 501.5.

“We got our work in this weekend and I was happy to see it and happy the men and women did it,” Milwaukee head coach Kyle Clements said. “This meet was something that was absolutely necessary for our training and for our season. We were put to the test, both mentally and physically over the weekend and I feel like we prevailed in everything we were looking for, not just the result but pushing ourselves. The times are not going to really reflect what happened here but we proved to ourselves that we can do what we need to and that will be necessary come February.”

Juniors Emily McClellan and Becky Yokosh continued their dominating season, winning a pair of events on the day.

McClellan took the top spot in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.60) and the 200 breast (2:22.50), winning each event by more than three seconds.

Yokosh first won the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 58.74. Junior Erika Pliner came in second at 1:00.28 and freshman Kelsey Abbas was fourth at 1:01.65. Yokosh later won the 200 back, touching the wall first at 2:06.03, more than six seconds in front of second place.

The Panthers also took the top spot in two of their three relays on the day. McClellan, Abbas, Anna Yontz and Diana Diel combined to win the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7 minutes, 57.85 seconds. In the day's final event, McClellan, Diel, Sierra Townsend and Lindsey Verhulst teamed up to win the 400 free relay at 3:35.89.

Milwaukee had plenty of other strong swims on the day, including second-place showings by Maggi Beck (400 IM), Mary Kuyvenhoven (200 fly), Townsend (100 fly), Diel (200 free) and the 200 medley relay team.

Milwaukee will take a break from action for Thanksgiving before returning Nov. 30 for the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational.
