Wisconsin-Eau Claire vs. Northern Michigan

EAU CLAIRE, Wisconsin, October 23. THE UW-Eau Claire women's swimming & diving team picked up its first win of the season by outscoring visiting NCAA Division II University of Northern Michigan 141-101 today at the McPhee Physical Education Center.

En route to the victory, the Blugolds earned six first place finishes and a total of 27 top-three results.

Three Blugolds recorded multiple victories. Julia Olson (Jr.-Faribault, Minn.) earned the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.77 seconds and led a trio of Blugolds in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.57. Olson also teamed up with Megan Finley (Sr.-Waunakee, Wis.), Kirsten Lickel (Jr.-Madison, Wis./East) and Casey Preissel (Sr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) to claim first in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team's time of 3:44.86 was over 20 seconds faster than the Wildcats' second place effort.

Preissel added to the relay win with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle race after swimming a time of 2:01.07. She also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke.

Nicole Dorvinen (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) swam her way to first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.23 and the 500-yard freestyle after recording a 5:28.19. In the 500, Blugold swimmers Angie Bakula (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./West) and Alaina Guns (Jr.-Conrath, Wis./Flambeau) rounded out the top three with times of 5:39.47 and 5:43.65.

In diving, the Wildcats denied Eau Claire victories, but the Blugolds managed three solid placings. Katrina Fitzgerald (So.-Farmington, Minn.) led Eau Claire with a second place in the three-meter event and third place in the one-meter dive. Becca Moos (So.-White Bear Lake, Minn./St. Agnes) nabbed third place in the three-meter event.

The Blugolds will compete next Saturday in a triangular against UW-Stevens Point and St. Cloud State University (Minn). The events, hosted by Stevens Point, are set to begin at 1 p.m.
