Wilton YMCA Wins Long Course YMCA National Championships in Maryland; Wilton Wins Men, YMCA Aquatic Center Wins Women

COLLEGE PARK, MD – 07-31-04 – WILTON YMCA outdistanced the YMCA Aquatic Center 617-481.5 to win the 2004 Long Course YMCA combined team championship.

1,342 athletes from 150 teams crushed into the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium at the University of Maryland to give the meet the same exuberant atmosphere for which the spring meet is so famous. Wilton also won the men’s championship. YMCA Aquatic Center was top team for the women and second in the combined scoring. No team placed in the top three of both men and women.

The women led the way on the last two night of the meet with two more record performances from Tricia Weaner, West Shore-PA. Weaner won the 100 butterfly at 1:03.22, being chased by Adrian McKinlay, Cheshire, who was also under the old mark at 1:03.31. Then Weaner held off Ashley Jones, Joliet, in the 200 backstroke, 2:15.38 to 2:15.50.

The 200 backstroke battle was unofficially for swimmer of the meet as Weaner and Jones each went into it with two wins and two meet records. Jones had previously won both Individual Medleys at 2:19.57 and 4:53.41.

Laurie English, Montclair, had a great 50 backstroke at :29.32, barely 1 second off the 2000 world record of :28.25 by Germany’s Sandra Voelker.

Emily Christy, Boyertown, had a fine win in the 200 butterfly in 2:16.39.

Alexa Merz, Palisades-Malibu, picked up the 50-100 free double, while Leah Gingrich, West Shore-Harrisburg, was her counterpart in the distances, winning 800-1500. We reported earlier that Jenny Botzum, Triangle Area, picked up a breaststroke double, 50 and 200.

Pat Shirk, Pottstown, completed a sweep of the men’s backstrokes, adding the 50 and 200 (2:04.91) to his :57.70 100 win. Eric Swenson, Fanwood-Scotch Plains, won the 50 (:29.96) and 100 breaststrokes (1:06.37), joining Bobby Savulich, Metuchen-Edison winner of the 100-200 freestyle as a double winner, setting a meet record 1:52.25 in the longer event.

Chris Schenk, Northwestern Dupage, broke two meet records but only came up with one win for his efforts. He won the 800 in a record 8:25.64 and broke the 1500 record by about 3 seconds at 16.11.49. Chris’ problem in the latter event was champion Kyle Young, YMCA Aquatic Center, who shattered the 1500 mark at 15:57.55.
