Widmer Not Interested in British Job

BRISBANE, Australia, September 5. WITH Bill Sweetenham out as Great Britain's National Performance Director, don't look for Australian Stephan Widmer to take over the role. Based out of the Queensland Academy of Sport and the coach of Libby Lenton, Widmer has declared he's not interested in bolting for Great Britain before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Widmer's name has been tossed around in recent months as a coach Great Britain has targeted to continue its surge. Widmer has had discussions with British Swimming about coaching possibilities, but leaving before the Beijing Games is not one of his options. Sweetenham was expected to stay on until after Beijing, but came to an agreement to leave prior to the Olympics.

There is no indication that Widmer would not consider a move to Great Britain after Beijing, particularly with British Swimming offering hefty sums of money for six high-quality coaches. Widmer, from Switzerland, has molded Lenton into one of the top performers in the world. He also guided Leisel Jones until she shifted her training base to Melbourne earlier this year.
