West Lafayette High Legend Richard Wachs Passes Away at 68

Richard Wachs, head coach of West Lafayette High swimming for 40 years, passed away today at the age of 68.

Wachs coached the Red Devils’ boys swimming team for 40 years, while also helming the girls program during 30 of those years.

Wachs was named the Hoosier Conference boys coach of the year 28 times, and also earned 17 of those honors on the girls side as well.  His combined dual meet record ended at 808 wins against 285 losses. His teams also won 28 combined sectional championships, and he managed to coach a trio of individual state champions during his tenure.

In 2013, Wachs was honored by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association with the Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Award.
