West Chester Men and Women Looking to Sweep PSAC Titles

MECHANICSBURG, Pennsylvania, February 24. THE West Chester men's and women's swimming teams furthered their leads with a combined seven victories on day three of the 2007 PSAC Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School Natatorium and are looking to secure their 20th and fifth championships, respectively.

The Golden Ram women won five of the seven contested events Saturday night and currently lead after three days with a total of 560 points, 174 ahead of defending champion Clarion. With a total of 137 points on Saturday night, Indiana (Pa.) extended what was a one-point lead over fourth-place Shippensburg and now have a total of 277 while the Lady Raiders have 261.

The eight-time defending champion West Chester men totaled an unbelievable 340.5 points on Saturday night and now have a three-day total of 609.5, 121.5 in front of Clarion who is in second with 488 points. Shippensburg is third, followed by Edinboro and Indiana (Pa.) in the top-five.

West Chester junior Kathrin Dumitru (Kunzell, Germany) won her second individual championship with a new meet record and NCAA "A" cut time in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best mark of 1:02.62. On Friday night, Dumitru posted an NCAA "A" cut time of 2:04.89 to capture the 200-yard IM title.

In addition to her 100 breast championship Friday night, Dumitru was a member of her third relay team championship as she teamed with junior Kate Jones (Spring Grove/Spring Grove), senior Kori Kilfeather (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) and freshman Jackie Borkowski (Norristown/Methacton) to post an NCAA "A" cut time and new conference meet record time of 1:46.61 in the 200-yard medley relay.

There have been a total of four new conference meet records set through the first 26 events.

West Chester sophomore Katie Brosseau (Rogersville, Mo./Logan-Rogersville) won her second individual championship this weekend by posting an NCAA "A" cut time of 4:31.57 in the 400-yard IM while Borkowski won the 100-yard backstroke in an NCAA "A" cut time of 57.19 seconds.

The Golden Rams' 800-yard freestyle relay also took first in the final event of the evening.

The Golden Ram women have won 11 of the 23 women's events contested through three days of the 2007 PSAC Championships. The only other two schools to win an event came on Saturday night when Indiana (Pa.) senior Carlee Myers (Lansdale/North Penn) and Bloomsburg junior Dianna Smith (West Grove/Avon Grove) won the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle.

Smith posted an NCAA "A" cut with a season-best mark of 1:52.96 while Myers bettered her previous NCAA "B" cut time with a mark of 58.21 seconds to upset top-seeded Kilfeather of West Chester who finished second in 58.22 seconds.

West Chester won five of the seven contested events on the men's side led by the 800-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Max Bernardes (King George, Va./King George), freshman Brendan Fanslau (Lansdale/North Penn), junior Chris Salomone (Lansdale/North Penn) and sophomore Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) who posted an NCAA "A" cut time of 6:50.94, five seconds faster than their previous season-best.

Bernardes won his first individual championship of this year's event with an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:05.96 while junior Bart Ostrowski (Poland/SMS) won his second title, winning the 200 free in 1:41.61.

Senior Jeremy Sherin (Wynnewood/Haveford) and senior Joerg Zimmermann (Gundelfingen, Germany) were the other two winners for the Golden Rams with Sherin taking first in the 100 breaststroke and Zimmerman winning the 100-yard butterfly.

Clarion won its second relay championship on Saturday night by capturing first in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.52, 0.19 seconds ahead of West Chester. On Friday, Golden Eagles' 200-yard freestyle relay team captured first with in a new meet record time of 1:22.51.

Indiana (Pa.) sophomore Pawel Glowiak (Gorzow, Poland/Roselle Catholic) won his first career conference championship with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke as he posted an NCAA "A" cut time of 50.99 seconds. Glowiak and Shippensburg senior Mike Owen (Carlisle/Big Spring) are the only two swimmers not from West Chester or Clarion to win individual titles through 13 men's events.
