Water Polo Women Honored as USOC Team of the Month After Super Final Win

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif – July 31, 2004 — USA Water Polo recently announced that the U.S. Olympic Committee has named the women of Team USA from USA Water Polo as its Team of the Month for June, marking the first time that the women’s squad has captured the award.

Team USA won its sixth straight international tournament with a gold medal
finish at the first-ever FINA Women’s World League Super Finals with a
thrilling shootout win over World Cup champ Hungary before 3,100 fans at the
Charter All Digital Aquatic Centre in Long Beach, Calif., on June 27. The
tournament featured all eight of the teams that will participate in this
year’s Summer Olympics. The win gave the U.S. its sixth straight first place
finish in international competition. The last time that the U.S. missed out
on a first place finish on its home soil was the 2002 U.S. Cup in Chicago,
Ill.

Since 1999, the U.S. has only failed to play for a medal in one
international tournament, taking a fifth place finish at the 2003 Thetis Cup
in Greece. Over that span, the U.S. took the top spot at the 2003 Pan
American Games and World Championships and silver at the 2002 World Cup and
2000 Olympics.

The team’s performance at the World League Super Finals solidified the
team’s billing as the gold medal favorite heading into the Athens Games.

The U.S. finished ahead of USA Softball in the Team of the Month balloting.
