Water Polo Wednesday:Stanford, Cal Baptist Host Invites

PHOENIX, Arizona, February 6. SEVERAL of the top-20 ranked women's college water polo teams converged on Stanford University for the Stanford Invitational Feb. 2-3. Making the trip to Palo Alto were (Jan. 23 ranking in parentheses) UCLA (3), Cal (4), San Jose State (9), Hawaii (12), UC Davis (13), Indiana (14) and Hartwick (16).

For the fourth straight year, the Cardinal captured the Stanford Invitational title. This year they finished off with an 8-5 victory over the UCLA Bruins. Two freshmen posted hat tricks–Stanford's Anna Yelizarova and UCLA's Rachel Fattal.

Stanford cruised into the final with an 11-2 drubbing of UC Davis. Stanford finished first in Bracket A (2-0), followed by San Jose State (1-1) and UC Davis (0-2).

In Bracket B, UCLA finished with a perfect 3-0. They defeated Indiana 9-5, Cal 7-4 and Hawaii 12-7. Cal finished second in the bracket (2-1), with Hawaii third (1-2) and Indiana fourth (0-2). The Olympic Club, based in San Francisco, sent a squad for an exhibition dual with Stanford to begin the tournament.

About 360 miles southeast of the Stanford Invitational, the California Baptist Lancers held their first Lancer Mini Invite Feb. 2 in Riverside, Calif. The No. 18 Lancers hosted No. 6 UC Irvine, No. 7 San Diego State and No. 17 CSU Northridge, as well as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Concordia, CSU Bakersfield and CSU San Bernardino.

In the first match of the tournament, the Lancers were defeated 10-5 by Cal State Northridge. The Matadors were led by four-goal scorer Lindsy Nelson. The junior scored one goal in each period. Sophomores Katie Kammer and Marisa Young put in two goals apiece, and juniors Melissa Doll and Leah Janke scored once. Freshman Samantha Banks scored twice for the Lancers, with freshman Hannah Evans, sophomore Laura Kocsis and senior Kim Latschaw posting one goal each.

The remainder of the top 20 teams enjoyed a bye weekend. This weekend, Princeton will host the Princeton Invitational with Cal, Villanova, George Washington, Harvard and NYAC competing. UC San Diego will conduct the Triton Invitational. Making their season debuts at the Triton Invitational will be USC (2) and Arizona State (5). Loyola Marymount (8), Michigan (tie for 10) and UC Santa Barbara (15) will also take part.

In dual meet competition, Brown (20) will be taking on four teams over the weekend–Colorado State and Wagner (Feb. 9) plus Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and St. Francis-Brooklyn (Feb. 10).
