Water Polo: US Men to Play Brazil in Southern Cal

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, July 3. THE United States men’s national water polo team will play a three game exhibition series against the Brazilian national team, July 6-8, 2001. Each game will be played at a different Southern California venue. The series will be a rematch of the final game from this year’s World Championship qualification tournament that was held
in March in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The U.S. won the game, 7-5.

"The games against Brazil will be great competition," said Ricardo Azevedo, assistant coach, U.S. men’s national team. "The Brazilian squad has played
together for a long time and will force our men to think. We will use these games to concentrate on our 6 on 5 and the timing of our offense."

Team USA and Brazil will use the series as preparation for the upcoming FINA World Championships in Japan. The competition against the veteran Brazilian squad will be an interesting test for the young American men who have not played against international competition since June 7. Despite not having played in a month, the U.S. men have been hard at work, and will use this opportunity against Brazil as a chance to fine-tune key areas of its game.

"Games such as these are important for the development of our team," said Ratko Rudic, head coach, U.S. men’s national team. "The competitive experience is a very important factor for a teams success. These games will
offer us a competitive experience."

The U.S. and Brazil will play their first game at 9:00 p.m. on July 6, at the USA Water Polo National Aquatic Center, in Los Alamitos, California. On July 7, at 7:30 p.m., at Claremont College in Pomona and on July 8, at 7:00 p.m., at El Toro High School in Lake Forest.
