SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – The United States fell behind early and lost to Yugoslavia 8-4 in the fifth place match at the XI Men’s Water Polo World Cup.
Yugoslavia led 2-0 after the first quarter. Tony Azevedo cut the lead to 2-1 with an extra-man goal early in the second, but Dejan Savic and Petar Trbojevic tallied for a 4-1 halftime advantage.
Chi Kredell nailed a quick cross-cage goal from the perimeter to open the scoring in the second half, but Yugoslavia answered back. Wolf Wigo scored on the six-on-five to bring the deficit to 5-3 at 4:30 in the third. A goal by Aleksandar Ciric on the ensuing possession moved Yugoslavia to a three goal advantage at 4:02.
The USA’s Chris Humbert scored on the extra-man in the fourth quarter, but his goal was sandwiched by tallied by Branko Pekovic and Danilo Ikodinovic. Ikodinovic led all scorers with three goals.
Hungary recaptured the World Cup title with a 5-3 victory over Italy in the finals. In the bronze medal match, Spain edged Russia 9-8 on a goal by Gustavo Marcos with 14 seconds left. Spain qualified for the Olympic Games with the victory.
In the seventh place contest, Greece downed Australia in sudden death overtime, 10-9.
