Washington vs. Washington State

PULLMAN, Washington, February 7. THE No. 25 University of Washington women's swim team concluded their dual meet schedule on Saturday with a convincing 162.5-96.5 victory over Washington State, finishing the season with a 12-8 overall record and a 5-4 Pac-10 record.

The women swam strong in their final tune-up before this month's Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash., winning 12 out of the 14 races, including both relays.

Ashley Daly, Hannah Ross and Lindsey Sharp were double winners for UW on Saturday. Daly won both the distance free events, the 500 free in 4:56.99 and the 1000 free in 10:02.32. Ross won both backstroke events, touching first in the 100 back in 55.30 and the 200 back in 1:59.187. Sharp, meanwhile, won both sprint free events, placing first in the 50 free in 23.79 and the 100 free in 51.43.

Other Husky winners included Kelly Flynn, who was first in the 200 free in 1:51.01, Genevieve Patterson, who finished first in the 100 breast in 1:02.51, Erin Campbell, who won the 100 fly in 55.71 and Danielle Gong, who emerged victorious in the 200 IM in 2:06.52. Campbell finished second in two other events, the 200 free and 200 back.

Freshman Amelia Messegee also had a good day, finishing second in the 50 free and third in the 200 free while also helping the 400 free relay to a victory. Messegee joined Liz Johnson, Flynn and Sharp in winning the 400 free relay in 3:26.85 while Gong, Patterson, Campbell and Sharp combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:42.56.

"We actually set about five pool records today and two of our swims were faster than their team records in those events so it was a good day," Washington head coach Whitney Hite said. "Hannah Ross, Ashley Daly and Erin Campbell all swam well, it was pretty much the usual suspects again. I thought Kelly Flynn and Amelia Messegee swam well and Danielle Gong had a good 200 IM. We won all but two events which showed our dominance."

The Huskies now turn their attention to the Pac-10 Championships and the NCAA Championships in March. The women's Pac-10 Swimming & Diving Championships will take place at the King County Aquatic Center, Feb. 25-28, while the men's Pac-10 Championships take place in Long Beach, Calif., March 4-7.

"You always want to be faster but as I told the girls, all we have to do is rest. The hay is in the barn we just have to land the plane and every over cliché you can think of," Hite said. "We're in a good place. We've done a lot of hard work and I'm excited about seeing some fast swimming. I think we've got a legitimate shot, whether we show it in the team scores or not because we don't have diving, of both the men and women walking away with everyone knowing we're the fourth best in the Pac-10."

Special thanks to Washington for contributing this report.
