Washington vs. Elizabethtown

CHESTERTOWN, Maryland, January 17. THE Washington College women's swim team cruised to a 120-71 non-conference win over visiting Elizabethtown this afternoon at the Casey Swim Center. The Shorewomen improve to 8-2 overall, while the Blue Jays fall to 6-5.

Sophomore Rachel Glasser (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) won two events on the day, setting the school's season-best time in the 100 butterfly (1:00.31) and capturing the 1650 freestyle (18:48.91).

Also winning two events on the day were freshmen Kelly Dunbar (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) and Jenna Moore (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales). Dunbar won the 200 individual medley (2:23.20) and the 500 freestyle (5:36.06). Moore gained victory in the 50 freestyle (25.87) and the 100 freestyle (57.60).

Junior Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) won the 200 freestyle in 2:06.34, senior Kimber Shoemaker (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) earned the win in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.28 and the 200 medley relay team of Shoemaker, Moore, Gerhart and freshman Mary Stroman (Bala Cynwyd, PA) triumphed with a time of 1:56.56. Washington won all nine events it did not exhibition.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Glasser, freshman Laura Risell (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), freshman Morgan Phillips (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) and junior Cailin Eisele (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) had the best time with a mark of 1:47.04, an event Washington swam as an exhibition.

Washington had three second place performers on the day with Gerhart in the 100 butterfly (1:02.54), Phillips in the 100 backstroke (1:06.71), Stroman in the 500 freestyle (5:41.22). In an exhibition heat for the Shorewomen, Dunbar had a time of 1:13.14 in the 100 breaststroke.

For the men, Sophomore Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) and freshman Austin Auger (McLean, VA/Langley) each had the top time in two individual events each as the Washington College men's swim team coasted to a 120.5-38.5 win over visiting Elizabethtown in a non-conference dual meet this afternoon at the Casey Swim Center. The Shoremen improved to 4-3 on the season with the victory, while the Blue Jays fall to 2-9.

Violette won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.11 and had a WC season-best time in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.61. Auger captured victory in thre 200 individual medley in 2:09.32 and had the best mark in the 100 breastroke with a time of 1:05.44.

Other Washington winners on the day were senior Dan Wentzel (Exton,
PA/Henderson) in the 1650 freestyle (18:07.83), junior Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) in the 100 butterfly (55.77), junior Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) in the 100 freestyle (51.78) and freshman Nick Longworth (Media, PA/Strath Haven) in the 500 freestyle (5:16.25). The relay team of Longworth, Auger, Pollock and senior Phil Munger (Devon, PA/Conestoga) captured the 200 medley relay in 1:46.79.

Munger finished second in two events, the 50 freestyle (24.61) and 100 butterfly (1:00.62). Also garnering second place finishes were Soper in the 200 freestyle (1:57.77), Wentzel in the 100 freestyle (57.17) and Pollock in the 500 freestyle (5:17.90). The 200 medley relay team of Violette, freshman John Helenak (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg), senior Mike Caro (Yorktown, VA/Yorktown) and freshman Ben Longwell (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) finished second with a mark of 1:54.25.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Wentzel, junior Dan Beadell (Timonium, MD/Loyola Blakefield), Longworth and Soper tallied a time of 1:39.32.
