Washington State University Swim Team to Assist at Relay for Life

PULLMAN, Washington, September 21. FOR the second straight year, the Washington State women's swimming team will help organize the Relay for Life, an annual event hosted by the American Cancer Society. The day-long event, held at WSU's Mooberry Track, will kick off Saturday, Sept. 24, and will last through the night, culminating in a Sunday morning closing ceremony.

Relay for Life was created over 20 years ago as a way to raise funds for cancer research. Participants create teams and gather at a location in their community to take turns walking or running laps. WSU's Mooberry Track will be the central location for this year's Relay for Life in Pullman.

Senior swimmer Katie Van Horne has led the volunteer efforts for the past two years and has helped organize the swim team's involvement with the annual event.

"Last year we just helped them to do anything they needed help with," Van Horne said. "This year we have a bigger role because they want to have events throughout the day so we'll get to help with those. It's really fun to help out. There's always a lot of people and we have a really good time."

This year, the fundraiser will carry an Olympic-related theme. All day long, participants can join in on activities designed like Olympic events but with an added twist.

"There's going to be a marshmallow shotput and a javelin throw but with a big pretzel instead," said Van Horne.

Opening ceremonies for the event will take place at 3 p.m., and the event will conclude Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
