Washington State Swimming Defeats Idaho Women

MOSCOW, ID, February 7. WSU women’s swim team captured victory in 11 of 13 events on their way to a 163-74 win over the University of Idaho, Saturday in Moscow, Idaho, per Cougar reports.

The Cougars were led by sophomore Erin McCleave, freshman Bryn Mooney and freshman McKenzie Reiter who each won two races.

McCleave won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:20.95. Her time places her fourth on the Cougars All-Time Top 10 list. This was McCleave s first time competed in the 1000 freestyle in an intercollegiate competition. McCleave also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.56.

Mooney paced the Cougars with victories in the 100 butterfly (58.23) and the 200 backstroke (2.09.19).

Reiter won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.76. She also recorded a first place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.68.

Other event winners for WSU include: Monika Povilonyte in the 100 breaststroke who recorded a time of 1:06.25 on her way to victory.

Kayli Changstrom swam a 2:07.44 in the 200 butterfly to win the event.

In the 500 freestyle, Laurie Gregg s mark of 5:11.66 captured the victory.

Danielle Berish s time of 1:55.79 in the 200 freestyle was good enough to earn her the win and set a personal season best time in the event.

The 200 freestyle relay team featuring McCleave, Katie Van Horne, Povilonyte and Reiter captured WSU s 11th victory of the day by posting a time of 1:37.65.

In the 100 breaststroke WSU occupied the top four positions with Povilonyte in first, Jane Copland second, Changstrom coming in third and Maegan Wood finishing fourth.

Other notable swimmers for WSU include: Sheena Mills finishing second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.97. Wood (1:55.86) and Gregg (1:57.28) finished second and third in the 200 freestyle behind Berish. Van Horne was second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.12. Lina Daugvilaite recorded a second place finish in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.13. Lindsay Backhouse earned victory in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 2:10.34

WSU will compete Feb. 23-26 at the Pacific-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash. beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
