Washington State Defeats Pac-12 Foe Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Oregon, January 26. WASHINGTON State Swimming comes from behind in the last few events to topple Pac-12 foe Oregon State, 137 to 125.

The Cougars and the Beavers were even from the start tying the 200 yard medley relay. The WSU “B” relay comprised of Alison Mand, Shanell Sullenberger, Kelsey Bruggman, and Jenna Bekker touched the wall at the exact same time as the Beavers in 147.17. The WSU “A” relay of Emma Johansson, Anne Kenney, Shelbi Luchini, and Evelina Bieleckaite finished closely behind with a time of 1:47.22. And the battle was only beginning.

OSU went on to take lead in the next two events until Johansson finished first in the 100 back (56.53) giving WSU the lead once again. The Beavers fought back bringing a tie after the fifth event and then taking the lead through event seven. Bieleckaite won the 50 free (24.55) for WSU setting off a run of three Cougar victories in a row. Nicole Proulx went on to win the 100 free (52.03) and Loree Olson finished first in the 200 back (2:02.26).

OSU then took a one point lead after event 10 only to lose it to WSU after a first and second place finish in the 100 butterfly by Johansson and Bruggman, respectively. WSU went on to lead for the remainder of the meet capped off by a win in the 400 free relay. The WSU “A” relay of Proulx, Kenney, Bieleckaite, and Bekker finished ahead of the Beavers with a time of 3:29.39, nearly four seconds before OSU.

“We started out slow and then finished strong,” said WSU Head Coach Tom Jager, “the plan is to swim better each meet and we will do that against Idaho next week.”

Cougar Swimming returns home next week to take on the Idaho Vandals in a battle of the Palouse next Friday Feb. 1, 2013 5p.m. at Gibb Pool.
