Washington 4A Swimming and Diving Champs Come Down to Final Relay; Richland, Jackson Tie For Girls’ Title

FEDERAL WAY – In a meet that came down to the final relay, the Richland High School and Jackson High School girls’ swimming and diving teams tied for the team title at the Washington 4A Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Weyerhaueser King County Aquatic Center. Thanks to a victory in the final relay, Jackson pulled even with Richland as both teams scored 169 points. Newport High School finished third, only one point behind with 168. Wenatchee was also in the mix for the team title, finishing fourth with 164 points in one of the closest meets ever.

Newport kicked off the 4A meet with a win in the 200 medley relay thanks to Maddie Rainey, Jenny Huo, Elisa Fang and Kennedy Elhajj. The foursome touched in 1:48.58 to top Jackson’s Madison Pressler, Nicole Limber, Chloe Limargo and Alexis Nims (1:49.58) by a second. Gig Harbor’s Alana Ponce, Ursula Andren, Anna Furrer and Sarah Anderson touched third in 1:51.75.

Shortly after swimming in the medley relay, Jackson’s Madison Pressler dove right back in for the 200 free final, where she edged Issaquah’s Jenifer Matsuda for the title, 1:54.46 to 1:54.74. Brianna Lucien of Mariner wrapped up third in 1:55.21.

Kentlake’s Laura Williams made the most of her final opportunity to swim the 200 IM in high school competition, moving up from fourth to first in the final with a 2:05.72. Third seed Nicole Limberg of Jackson also moved up on the podium, finishing just behind in second with a 2:06.14. Stadium’s Kaycee Simpson, the top qualifier from prelims, wound up third in the final with a 2:06.86.

Alana Pries scored the first points of the meet for Emerald Ridge in the 50 free, edging Mount Vernon’s Emma Carlton for the title, 23.80 to 23.84. Newport’s Elisa Fang also broke 24, finishing third in 23.96.

Eastlake swept the top two spots in 1-meter diving, with teammates Kaela Call (425.90) and Christina Torrente (424.95) finishing less than a point apart on top of the standings. Federal Way’s Tia Thomas scored 403.60 points to take third.

Wenatchee’s Jessica Wierzbicki held off Mount Vernon’s Emma Carlton for the 100 fly title, 56.19 to 56.38. Kathy Lin of Skyline posted a 57.10 to round out the top three.

In the 100 free, Newport’s Elisa Fang finished just off her prelim time of 51.47, but she still had plenty of cushion over the rest of the field, touching first in 51.78. Emerald Ridge’s Alana Pries finished just under a second behind in 52.73, while Tahoma’s Jessica Miller posted a 53.07 for third.

The final of the 500 free came down to the last few yards, with Mariner’s Brianna Lucien getting her hand on the wall just ahead of Richland’s Claire Schaef, 5:03.69 to 5:04.01. Schaef made up more than two seconds on Lucien over the second half of the race but couldn’t quite close the gap. Issaquah’s Jenifer Matsuda finished on the podium again with a 5:09.09.

Puyallup’s foursome of Olivia Wood, Amy Kiuchi, Mackenzie Mergel and Lindsey Muiznieks put together the fastest 200 free relay of the meet at 1:40.16. Wenatchee’s Isabelle Dressel, Victoria Peterson, Kayli Brown and Jordan Hartley touched about half a second behind in 1:40.64, followed by Richland’s Claire Schaef, Lauren Hall, BreAnn Bell and Mckenzie Schroder in 1:41.52.

Cathryn Armstrong of Monroe held onto her top seed in the 100 back, dropping three tenths from prelims to take the state title in 56.93. Mount Vernon’s Emma Frey separated herself from the field to take second in 57.69, followed by Newport’s Maddie Rainey (58.54).

Jackson sophomore Nicole Limberg raced to a win in the final individual event of the day, topping the 100 breast in 1:04.07. Wenatchee’s Isabelle Dressel swam a 1:04.92 to take second, while Kentlake’s Laura Williams wrapped up her high school career with a third place showing at 1:05.02.

Chloe Limargo, Ashley Sawyer, Nicole Limberg and Madison Pressler led Jackson to victory in the 400 free relay, coming from behind on the final leg to overtake Puyallup’s Olivia Wood, Amy Kiuchi, Mackenzie Mergel and Lindsey Muiznieks (3:38.21). Jackson’s win vaulted them into a tie for first with Richland, who finished fifth in the relay. Heading into the final relay, Jackson sat in fourth, 12 points behind Richland. Wenatchee’s Jessica Wierzbicki, Jordan Hartley, Kayli Brown and Victoria Peterson swam a 3:40.24 to close out the meet with a fourth place finish in the team standings.
