Wasatch Front Fish Market Sweeps Utah Senior State SCY Championship

SAINT GEORGE, Utah, February 23. COOL temps brought hot swims to the Washington City Recreation Pool for the 2013 Utah Senior State Short Course Yard Championships, Feb. 15-16.

First-place team Wasatch Front Fish Market dominated the women's relay events. The team of Rhyan White, Tyler Stephenson, Lillian Moore and Kristine Pataray broke state records in both the 200 (1:47.34) and the 400 medley relays (3:57.83). The Wasatch Front Fish Market 400 free relay team of Lillian Moore, Claire Brooks, Tyler Stephenson and Kristine Pataray also logged in a state record breaking time (3:36.54).

Day one of competition found the women swimming strong in the 1650 free distance event. Amelia Draney of SUSA pulled ahead finishing with a time of 17:45.67. Natalie McDonald (18:23.68) and teammate Milava Shumilova (18:34.40) of Park City Swimming rounded out the top three. On the men's side James Sorenson (16:23.72) and teammate James Brinton (16:32.16) of Wasatch Front Fish Market pulled down the top two spots. Trey Freeman of Cottonwood Heights Aquatic Team finished third. His time of 16:57.78 broke the 11/12 boys state record.

Notable performances were turned in by Lillian Moore, WFFM (56.38) in the 100 fly and 400 IM (4:31.46). Katie Smith, HAST (58.99) and Rhyan White, WFFM (59.18) rounded out the 100 fly competition. Natalie McDonald, PCS (4:46.01) and Alisa Gouge, KYAT (4:51.51) finished two and three in the 400 IM.

In the 200 breast, Hannah Hansen, LA (2:25.00) was followed into the wall by Meghan O'Very, UBYU (2:28.83) and Tyler Stephenson, WFFM (2:30.39). Rhyan White, WFFM (57.40), Briana Francis, DRAT (58.79) and McKenzie Wells, UVRA (59.40) took the top spots in the 100 back.

Kristine Pataray, WFFM (24.82), Claire Jackson, WVA (24.97) and Kieresten Bradshaw, UBYU (25.04) raced it out in the 50 free. Amelia Draney, SUSA (1:53.64), Lillian Moore, WFFM (1:53.69) and Courtney Graff, WFFM (1:59.32) pulled down top finishes in the 200 free.

Kent Fellows, UBYU (51.34), Mitchell Hutchings, unattached (53.02) and Connor Anderson, UVRA (54.28) led the charge in the 100 fly. Greg Ballif, UBYU (2:09.30) and Michael King, unattached (2:09.67) finished ahead of Zach Carfi, PCS (2:15.79) in the 200 breast competition.

The 50 free saw the return of Kent Fellows to the top of the podium, UBYU (21.64), Brandan Shelly, KYAT (22.33) and Connor Anderson, UVRA (22.57) just could not close the gap on the leader. Long Gutierrez, CHAT (1:41.71) lead the charge in the 200 free and was followed into the wall by Josh Tanner, UBYU (1:45.34) and Kent Fellows, UBYU (1:45.46)

Mitchell Hutchings, unattached (54.14), Brendan Nguyen, WFFM (54.52) and Christopher Nielson, HAST (54.65) made a solid showing in the 100 back. Long Gutierrez, CHAT (4:07.83) smoked the competition in the 400 IM with Brendan Nguyen, WFFM (4:17.40) and Michael Pantelakis, SUSA (4:26.83) rounding out the field.

Day two of finals competition began with solid racing in the 500 free event by Amelia Draney, SUSA (5:04.06), Rachel Hubert, HAST (5:11.97) and Courtney Graff WFFM (5:20.94). Jarren Brinton (4:44.77) and James Sorensen (4:49.08) of WFFM went one and two while Christopher McClain, UVRA (4:56.18) finished third.

Briana Francis, DRAT performed well in the 100 breast (1:05.45) with Hannah Hansen, LA (1:06.44) and Ciera Orr, SWAT (1:08.78) rounding out the competition. Francis (2:05.08) had a comfortable finish in the 200 IM with Lillian Moore, WFFM (2:07.38) and McKenzie Wells, UVRA (2:11.01) following her into the wall.

The 100 free was a battle to the finish. Claire Jackson, WVA (52.80) came into the wall first with Amelia Draney, SUSA (52.99) on her heels and Kristine Pataray, WFFM (54.68) at the three spot.

Lillian Moore, WFFM crushed the competition in the 200 fly at 2:05.68 with Katie Smith, HAST (2:19.52) and Courtney Graff, WFFM (2:20.02) her closest competition. 13 year olds Rhyan White, WFFM (2:05.70) and Milava Shumilova, PCS (2:08.03) were the top finishers in the 200 back with Abbey Sorensen, DRAT (2:11.79) the third place finisher.

On the men's side Long Gutierrez, CHAT blew away the competition in the 100 breast (58.91), 200 fly (1:52.57) and 200 back (1:53.31). Brandan Shelly, KYAT (1:01.67) and Porter Roe, CVM (1:02.80) rounded on the 100 breast while Mitchell Hutching, unattached (1:58.78) and Ethan Pollock, HAST (2:01.02) went two and three in the 200 fly. Mitchell Hutching, unattached (1:57.97) and Jarren Brinton, WFFM (1:59.05) closed out the 200 back competition.

In the 100 free, Sean O'Very, CVM (48.38), Connor Anderson, UVRA (49.00) and James Sorensen, WFFM (49.53) battled it out until the finish. Brendan Nguyen, WFFM (2:00.97) edged out John Morris, UVRA (2:01.60) and Christopher Nielson, HAST (2:02.41) for the 200 IM title.
