Vlad Morozov Sprints to Win in 50 Free at L.A. Invite

A scratch from Nathan Adrian in the men’s 50-meter free left the event wide open for Trojan Swim Club’s Vlad Morozov and Nikita Lobintsev in finals of day three at the Los Angeles Invite. Morozov claimed the win with a 22.14, dropping .54 seconds from his prelims time of 22.68, but 1.03 seconds off his 2015 world best of 21.65. Lobintsev took second with a 22.47, while De Anza Cupertino Aquatic’s Shayne Fleming finished third with a 22.91.

Jordan Wilmovsky dominated the competition in the men’s 1500-meter free posting a final time of 15:06.96 for first. Wilmovsky dropped 28.02 seconds from his prelims time of 15:34.98. Ty Fowler of Tucson Ford Aquatics finished second with a 15:37.06, while Michael Brinegar was third with a 15:40.87.

SoCal’s Ella Eastin rose to the top of the women’s 200-meter IM with a 2:14.24, dropping 3.61 seconds from her prelims time of 2:17.85. Sonia Wang of Aquazot Swim Club grabbed second with a 2:14.90, while Cal’s Kelly Naze finished third with a 2:16.59.

Trojan Swim Club’s Nikita Lobintsev and Alexander Sukhorukov kept a tight race in the men’s 200-meter free, finishing .40 seconds apart. Lobintsev got to the wall first, finishing with a 1:49.07, a 2.69 second drop from his prelims time of 1:51.76. Sukhorukov claimed second with a final time of 1:49.47, dropping 4.25 seconds from his prelims time of 1:53.72. Cal’s Ryan Murphy rounded out the top three with a 1:49.96.

Tucson Ford Aquatic’s Emma Schoettmer dashed to a quick finish in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke posting a 2:28.23 to finish 3.92 seconds ahead of the competition. Stanford’s Sarah Haase and Team Bruin’s Emma Schanz kept a tight race for second with Haase getting her fingers on the wall .01 seconds ahead of Schanz to claim second with a 2:32.15. Schanz settled for third and a 2:32.16.

Kosuke Kitajima, swimming for Coca-Cola, grabbed first in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke with a 2:11.05 finish. Trojan Swim Club’s Steven Stumph slipped to second with a 2:12.99, while Sam Tierney, swimming unattached, was third with a 2:14.72.

Cal’s Farida Osman bested the competition in the women’s 50-meter free with a final time of 25.12. Tucson Ford Aquatic’s Margo Geer settled for second with a 25.34, while Trojan Swim Club’s Melissa Gates finished third with a 25.77. The top three finishers were the only women under 26 seconds in the event.
