Virginia Tech Men and Women Sweep West Virginia, American

BLACKSBURG, Va., Jan. 26. SIX pool records fell as the Virginia Tech swimming & diving teams picked up four victories Saturday afternoon at War Memorial
Pool in a double tri-meet on Senior Day.

The Hokie women's team moved to 7-2 on the year with victories over West Virginia and American. The Hokies downed WVU, 125-72 and the Eagles, 141-71. West Virginia beat American, 149-70 on the women's side.

On the men's side, the Hokies moved to 5-2 on the year with a 157.5-83.5 win over West Virginia and a 164-75 triumph over American. The Mountaineers downed American, 147.5-91.5.

Four pool records were broken on the women's side and two on the men's side.

For the women, senior Jill Turner broke two individual marks and was on the 400 freestyle relay team that set a new mark. Turner was the only double winner on the women's side, breaking the pool mark in the 50 free (23.49) and the 100 free (51.34) and teamed up with Jamie Trivett, Emily Guschke and Meagan Drolet to break the mark in 400 freestyle relay (3.29.72).

Kelly Furlong broke the other pool record, swimming a 2:06.74 in the 200 IM.

Sarah Gardner won the 1,000 free (10:25.06) and Jamie Spradlin took the 200 free with a time of 1:53.47. Jen McLaughlin won the 200 fly with a 2:07.39 and Jen Brielmaier won the 500 free with a swim of 5:05.37. In diving action, Robin Wood won the three-meter (222.20) and Katie Grossi won the one-meter with a combined total of 239.60.

On the men's side, Anders Frahm set a pool record in the 200 back with a time of 1:49.28, while the 400 freestyle relay team of Christian Lindberg, Brian Piantadosi, Steve Tozer and David Litchfield broke the pool mark with a time of 3:05.50.

Lindberg was the only double winner for the men, taking the 50 free (20.62)and the 100 free (46.25). Matt Bolen won the one-meter dive with a score of
264.85, while teammate Doug Roper won the three-meter dive with a score of 282.20.

Both teams are back in action next weekend, taking on Pittsburgh on the road. The meet starts at 1 p.m.
