Virginia Tech Gains Ten Student-Athletes in Fall Signing Period

BLACKSBURG, VA, November 23. VIRGINIA Tech’s swimming and diving program announced the signing of 10 athletes for the 2005-06 academic year.

"We are thrilled to welcome these 10 fine student-athletes into our Hokie family. These incoming freshmen carry the strong attributes that our program represents," said head coach Ned Skinner.

Claire Dickey, a native of Roanoke, Va., will compete in the backstroke, freestyle and IM events at Tech. She has career bests in the 100 backstroke of 58.31 and in the 200 backstroke of 2:04.25. Dickey's career best in the 50 freestyle is 24.31, while in the 200 IM it is 2:08.49.

Lara Beth Elder is a diver from Ford, Va. She is the 2004 AAA VHSL State Champion and is a first-team NISCA All-American. Elder is also a junior national qualifier.

Stephanie Jones, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., will compete in the butterfly and freestyle events for Tech. Her career bests in the 100 and 200 butterfly are 56.97 and 2:07.94, respectively. Jones has a best in the 50 freestyle of 24.32 and the 100 freestyle of 52.60. Her career mark in the 200 freestyle is 1:53.77.

Morgan Kowalchuk is from Richmond, Va., and will compete in the breaststroke and IM events for Tech. Her career best in the 100 breaststroke is 1:06.68. In the 200 breaststroke, her best time is 2:22.03, while she holds a mark of 2:10.15 in the 200 IM.

Allison Lettermoser, a native of Mechanicsburg, Pa., will compete in the IM and freestyle events for Tech. She has a career best of 52.89 in the 100 freestyle and 2:06.79 in the 200 IM.

Jordan McHorney is from Virginia Beach, Va., and will compete in the backstroke and freestyle events while at Tech. She has a career best of 57.63 in the 100 backstroke. In the 200 backstroke, her best time is 2:08.68. McHorney has posted a career best of 24.32 in the 50 freestyle event.

Megan Newell, a native of Ashburn, Va., will compete in the butterfly and freestyle events for Tech. She has a career best of 55.93 in the 100 butterfly, while posting a personal best of 2:07.53 in the 200 butterfly. Newell's career best in the 100 freestyle is 52.94.

Summer O'Donnell is from Cornelius, N.C., and will compete in the freestyle events for the Hokies. She has a career best of 1:53.33 in the 200 freestyle, while her best in the 500 freestyle is 4:58.50. O'Donnell's career mark in the 1,000 freestyle is 10:13.37.

Sara Smith, a native of McGaheysville, Va., will compete in the freestyle and IM events upon arriving at Tech. She posted a career best of 26.41 (LCM) in the 50 freestyle. Her best mark in the 100 freestyle is 58.14 (LCM). Smith has posted a time of 2:05.98 in the 200 freestyle (LCM) and 2:08.49 in the 200 IM.

Ian DeToll, from Culpeper, Va., will compete in the butterfly and IM events while at Tech. He has posted career marks of 50.77 in the 100 butterfly and 1:55.84 in the 200 butterfly. DeToll's career best in the 200 IM is 1:57.10.

"We believe that we have signed swimmers and divers who are hungry to improve at the college level and assist our program in making an impact at the ACC and NCAA level," said Skinner.
