Virginia and Virginia Tech Ready to Ignite ACC Rivalry

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. November 1. THE 14th-ranked University of Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams will travel to Virginia Tech for an Atlantic Coast Conference dual meet Wednesday evening (November 2) at 6:00 p.m. at War Memorial Pool. It marks the first time since 1998-99 the two schools are meeting in a swimming and diving dual meet. The winners of the men's and women's meets will earn one point apiece in the Commonwealth Challenge, a sport-by-sport competition between the universities.

The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams are coming off conference victories over Clemson on Saturday (October 29). The men won, 141-100, while the women came away with a 125-118 victory.

The Cavalier men stand at 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech is 1-4 overall and in the conference. UVA holds a 41-12 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1937-38. UVA has won the last 17 dual meets in the series, including a 166-77 victory in the last meeting in 1998-99. Virginia last suffered a loss to the Hokies back in the 1981-82 season when it dropped a 73-40 decision.

The Virginia women are ranked 14th in the nation, while Virginia Tech is 22nd. UVA is 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. The Hokies are 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference. The Cavaliers hold a commanding 23-1 lead in the all-time series against Virginia Tech. Just like the men's series, Virginia has won the last 17 dual-meet matchups dating back to 1982-83. The Hokies won 88-61 in the 1981-82 season for their only dual meet win in the series. The Cavaliers took the last meeting, 162-79, in the 1998-99 campaign. The two teams first met in the 1974-75 season with Virginia winning 74-53.

The Cavaliers currently lead the Commonwealth Challenge 3.5-1.0 over Virginia Tech.
