Video: Sibling Rivalry on Tap for Today’s Texas vs. North Carolina Dual Meet

AUSTIN, Texas, October 17. TODAY’S meet pitting the Texas Longhorns women’s team against the North Carolina Tar Heels will feature two siblings racing on rival teams in Austin.

Kendal Surhoff, a sophomore at UNC, could find herself racing younger sister Jordan this afternoon in dual meet action, most likely in the 200 individual medley. Though not on the level of Alyssa and Haley Anderson in terms of experience, the result of their matchup could cause some interesting discussions when the family gathers in a matter of weeks for the holidays.

Watching them from the stands will be older brother Austin, who completed his collegiate eligibility last spring. Austin was the NCAA champion in the 200 IM in 2010 and made a name for himself in the long course version this summer with a fourth-place finish at the USA Swimming nationals.

In the following video from the Longhorn Network, Austin and Jordan talk about choosing to attend Texas over North Carolina, where their parents and aunt had great success as student-athletes. Jordan also talks about her thoughts on being on opposing teams for the first time with her sister, and what the sibling rivalry was like when they were younger.

“We fought a lot,” Jordan said. “We were always jealous of each other in certain ways, but we always looked up to each other.”

The smack talk started early for Jordan, who sent a Tweet telling Kendal “to get ready.”

As for the parents, former baseball player B.J. Surhoff and champion swimmer Polly Winde, they will be neutral in the cheering section today, wearing the colors of Texas and North Carolina, according to Jordan.

Austin will be busy cheering not only for his sisters, but his teammates on the Texas men’s squad, who will also be racing against North Carolina today. Swimming World will bring you recaps of both meets on SwimmingWorld.com.
