Zane Grothe blasted out perhaps the most surprising swim of the night at U.S. Nationals with his triumph in the 400 free. Grothe blasted a time of 3:45.98, and he finished the day having dropped more than five seconds from his entry time headed into the morning prelims. In between, he had posted a top-qualifying time of 3:48.93 in prelims.

After his victory, Grothe spoke about his massive time drop and why he felt his improvements had been a long time coming. He explained a recent change he made in his training and discussed his expectations for the 1500, which he considers his best event, later in the week.
