IRVINE, California, August 8. HEADING into the final heat of the men’s 100 fly during Friday’s prelims at U.S. Nationals, Michael Phelps knew he had his work cut out for him. Having seen Tim Phillips, Tom Shields, and Mat Ellis already clock times under 52 seconds, he knew he had to drop the hammer. He did so, clocking the top time in the world of 51.14 to claim the top seed. After the race, Phelps spoke briefly about what he wanted out of the prelims swim and his expectations for the final tonight.
