Victorian Championships: Youngster Roundup

MELBOURNE, Australia, January 10. WHILE the big guns were posting some quick in-season times at the 2008 Victorian Championships in Melbourne, Australia over the weekend, the little kids were also experiencing some top flight competition.

Here's a quick round-up of the winners last weekend as Swimming Victoria heads into the mostly teenage swimming this weekend:

Girls 11 & Under
Jemma Schlicht, 10, owned this division with four victories throughout the meet. She claimed the 100 (1:04.75) and 200 (2:19.63) freestyle events, while sweeping the butterfly swims in the 100 (1:10.86) and 200 (2:41.29).

Emily Zukic, 11, accomplished a triple with wins in the 100 (1:20.33) and 200 (2:51.15) breast along with the 200 IM (2:40.97).

Zoe Hutton, 11, won the 100 back (1:15.20) and Tanika Cameron, 11, took the 200 back (2:40.84) to round out title winners.

Girls 12
Hayley Baker completed a four-title run at the meet with wins in the 200 free (2:16.49), 100 back (1:09.73), 200 back (2:29.36) and 200 IM (2:34.26), while Jayde Millington and Emma Niere each won a pair of titles.

Millington swept the breaststroke events with wins in the 100 (1:21.02) and 200 (2:49.70), while Niere took the butterfly events in 100 (1:09.01) and 200 (2:32.85).

Briony Johnson picked up the last title with a 1:02.88 in the 100 free.

Girls 12 & Under Relays
Hayley Baker, Sophie Coltman, Natasha Zalewski and Hannah Hogarth won the 200 free relay in 1:58.83, while Baker, Jayde Millington, Zalewski and Coltman won the 200 medley relay in 2:13.61.

Boys 11 & Under
Liam Fisk, 11, dominated the division with five triumphs. He swept the breaststroke events with wins in the 100 (1:25.64) and 200 (3:04.42), and surfaced victorious in the 200 back (2:34.17), 100 fly (1:13.82) and 200 IM (2:38.26).

Four other swimmers garnered titles. Leon Dong, 11, won the 100 free (1:04.17) and Mack Horton, 11, snared the 200 free (2:19.38). Matthew Charlesworth, 11, picked up the 100 back (1:12.50), while James Macri, 11, won the 200 fly (2:48.33).

Boys 12
Alec Guerzoni paced the division with three wins. He touched first in the 100 fly (1:08.04), 200 fly (2:27.63) and the 200 IM (2:33.51).

Meanwhile, Lachlan McLeish swept the backstroke events with wins in the 100 (1:09.63) and 200 (2:28.60), while Phillip O'Brien did the same in the breaststroke with wins in the 100 (1:19.81) and 200 (2:50.45).

Jesse Bozin (100 free – 1:02.28) and Ben Holland (200 free – 2:14.74) comprised the rest of the title winners.

Boys 12 & Under Relays
Ben Anderson, Mark Irwin, Joel Simondson and Tyler Rik claimed the 200 free relay in 2:00.16, while Liam Fisk, Phillip O'Brien, Nicholas Groenewald and Tim Gouskov won the 200 medley relay in 2:13.00.
