NEW COMMIT: Canadaigua, N.Y. native Thomas Chapman has announced his commitment to George Mason University as a member of the class of 2023.

Chapman does his club swimming with Victor Swim Club under coaches Brett Leader and Scott Wisner and most recently won the 200 IM and 400 IM at Buffalo Speedo Sectionals. He qualified for and swam at the 2018 Winter Junior Nationals and he was a championship finalist in the 400 IM at Richmond Futures this past summer. Also swimming for Canandaigua Academy, he finished sixth in the 200 IM at the 2019 New York High School Federation Championships and was Section V Class B Outstanding Swimmer.

He told Swimming World:

“I am very excited to announce my commitment to George Mason University.  GMU has the level of swimming and the high quality education that I wanted and Coach Ward and the team made me feel at home and part of something special.  I am looking forward to joining the team and starting my career as a Patriot.”

His best times include:

  • 200 breast – 2:05.92
  • 400 IM – 4:01.30
  • 200 IM – 1:54.44
  • 100 breast – 59.26
  • 1000 free – 9:47.48
  • 500 free – 4:44.01

Chapman’s versatility will help add valuable depth to George Mason’s roster for the upcoming 2019-20 season and his current best 400 IM time would have placed in the B-final in the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championships. He would also have been within range of scoring in the 200 breast and 200 IM, making him a threat to score in three individual events in his freshman season.
