Vermont Splits with Stony Brook, Army

WEST POINT, New York, October 5. THE University of Vermont swimming and diving team split in its season opener downing America East rival Stony Brook 77-36 and falling to host Army 72-41. Sophomore Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.) and freshman Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) each had two wins against both opponents, while Weaver broke a UVM varsity and two freshmen records in her first collegiate meet.

"I am very pleased with our results today, seeing our girls come out and swim hard against a league opponent in Stony Brook and a strong program with a rich tradition in Army," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer. "The team came out and swam at a high level with some great efforts and I was happy with the results for our first meet of the season."

Picking up wins against both squads were MacMillan in the 200 freestyle in 1:56.44 and the 500 free in 5: 08.64, while Weaver was victorious in the 200 IM in a freshmen record time of 2:12.44 and the 200 backstroke in a Vermont varsity and freshmen mark of 2:07.42. Also earning wins against both squads was sophomore Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.) in the 100 freestyle in 54.65.

Against Stony Brook the Catamounts won 11 different events. Freshman diver Renee Gliddon (Acton, Mass.) won both the one- meter (188.20) and three-meter (185.00) events. Senior Nicole Underhill (South Burlington, Vt.) took the 200 butterfly in 2:16.36, while juniors Lauren Honrath (Monroe, Conn.) won the 1,000 free (10: 53.18) and Ashley Gillespie (Ithaca, N.Y.) was victorious in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.43).

Also winning was the 400-medley relay team made up of Weaver, Gillespie, Underhill and Clark in 4: 03.92.
