Vendt, Phelps, Kirk, Krayzelburg, and Both Peirsols Rip It Up on Final Day of Janet Evans Invite

LOS ANGELES, July 21. THE excellence of the performances that were on display in the initial three days of the Janet Evans Invitational carried over on Day 4.

Four more meet records fell beneath the waves of the McDonald's Olympic Stadium Pool on the campus of USC this evening, with both women's and men's mile
standards falling, as well as the women's 100 back and the men's 100 fly.

And North Baltimore's Michael Phelps, making his inaugural appearance here, almost made it a quintet as he came within .07 of breaking the Evans' record
in the 200 IM but fell just short. As consolation, however, he did break the record in the 100 fly.

Similar to her dominant performance in the 800 free opening night, NOVA's Hayley Peirsol was the class of the mile this evening as she stroked to a pr 16:27.78 victory over NBAC's Megan Sackett's 16:40.10. Peirsol's swim ranks her sixth globally, third-fastest American this year. Her previous pr had been a
16:33+ from the Nationals ar Minneapolis last spring.

In the men's mile, Trojan Erik Vendt made it three-for-three as far as meet records go with a 15:06.70-15:15.90 win over Olympic bronze medalist Chris
Thompson (CLub Wolverine).

Vendt's time is far and away his best-ever unshaved and he said the swim gave him confidence that he's in shape to take a crack at Thompson's American record 14:56.81 from Sydney at Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale next month. His pr is 14:59.11 from the 2000 Olympic Trials.

Phelps, whose 100 fly pr is 52.90, won handily in a seasonal-best 53.44, clipping the old record of 53.52 by Canada's Mike Mintekno from two years ago.

On the women's side, 200 fly champ Mary Descenza, who's always been known as a better 100 swimmer, won in her seassonal-best 1:00.48 to NOVA's Bethany
Goodwin's 1:00.50. Descenza's pr is 59.30 from last year's World Championship finals.

In the breaststrokes, Stanford's Tara Kirk struck gold for the second time with a 1:08.51-1:08.86 100 win over Cal's Staciana Stitts, a Sydney Olympian. On the men's side, ex-USC NCAA finalst Rysouko Imai took his
second title with a 1:03.15-1:03.91 win over NOVA's Dave Denniston, a former Auburn All-America.

The backstrokes saw Cal's Natalie Coughlin set a meet-record with her 1:00.52 clocking, which would be the world's fastest time this year were it not for the fact that Coughlin went a 1:00.19 — third-best performance in history — three weeks ago at Santa Clara.

Coughlin now has the world's second- (AR 1:00.18), third- (1:00.19), seventh- (1:00.37) and eighth- (1:00.52) fastest performances of all-time and
will be attempting to become the first woman under 1:00.0 at Lauderdale.

In the men's 100 back, world record-holder Lenny Krayzelburg (Trojan) held off 200 back world record-holder Aaron Peirsol — who had beaten him Friday
in the 200 — by a 55.00-55.10 margin.

The IMs saw Auburn's World and NCAA Champion Maggie Bowen come from behind to just beat out a determined Gabrielle Rose of NOVA, 2:15.33-2:15.43 on the women's side. Phelps won the men's race handily, touching in 2:02.60 to Champaign's Dan Trupin's 2:04.25.

Phelps' pr is a 15-16 NAG record 2:00.86 that won him the title at last summer's U.S. Nationals in CLovis and ranked him fourth globally for the year. Trupin upset Stanford teammate Markus Rogan — NCAA champ — to win the Pac-10 title this season for Stanford.
