Utah Sweeps Competition At Intermountain Shootout

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado, October 5. The University of Utah men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept all of their head-to-head dual meet matchups on Friday and Saturday at the Intermountain Shootout, hosted by Colorado Mesa University. On the men’s side, Utah topped Air Force, BYU, CMU and the CMU club team. On the women’s side, Utah bested CMU and BYU.

Both the men and women Utah swimming and diving teams won each of their duals this weekend at the Intermountain Shootout.

“This meet was a great experience for us. We learned a lot about what we have to keep working to improve upon in training, but also realize that we are ahead of where we were last year at this point. I think our improved team depth was very apparent this weekend,” said Utah head coach Joe Dykstra about the meet.

For the women, there were eleven wins for the day. Teaming up for first in the 200 free relay was team of Dorien Butter, Madeline Jamora, Rhianna Williams and Giulianna Gigliotti with a time of 1:35.92. Taking third in the event was Jenna Griffith, Amanda Barrett, Sophie Fiscella and Selin Ozturk (1:39.39) followed by fourth place finish team of Ashyln Karosas, Jenna Marsh, Hailey Pabst and Brianna Francis (1:39.52).

Team of Butter, Jamora, Williams and Gigliotti also teamed together for another first place finish in the 400 free with a time of 3:29.92. Also in the relay was second place finish by team of Pabst, Maddie Mesiel, Barrett and Petra Soininen (3:35.12).

Claiming the top spot in the 200 fly was Soininen with a time of 2:04.94 followed by second place finish from Isabella Kearns (2:06.85). Soininen holds the pool record in the event. Soininen also took the top spot in the 100 fly with a time of 56.67 with Melissa Paahk in second (57.36).

Stina Colleou touched in first in the 50 breast with a time of 30.41 with Marsh in second (30.84) and Butter in third (30.99). Colleou also took first in the 200 breast (2:16.41) with Francis in second (2:22.11).

In the 500 free, Miesel took first with time of 5:09.58 followed by Ozturk in second (5:12.30).

Taking first in the 200 Im was Francis with a time of 2:08.30. Kylie Boyce took second (2:10.50) with Kearns in third (2:10.87.

Gigliotti took first in the 100 free (52.30) with Butter in second with a time of 52.34.

Taking the top three spots in the 200 back was Barrett in first with a time of 2:02.18, Pabst in second (2:04.13) and Megan Kawaguchi taking third (2:04.84).

The men finished with seven first place finishes for the day. Team of Nick Soedel, Sean Bloore, Alex Brown and Alex Fernandes teamed together to take first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:21.83.

In the 200 fly, the top four spots were taken by the Utes. Taking first was Chris Taber (1:50.67) with Luis Macis taking second (1:51.33). Dave Fraser took third (1:52.66) and Ben Scott in fourth (1:53.38).

Taking second in the 50 breast was Jack Burton with a time of 26.20.

It went one, two, three in the 500 free with Bence Kiraly in first (4:30.85), Peter Kotson in second (4:37.28) and Brandon Shreeve in third (4:37.97). Kiraly broke the current pool record in the event.

Kristian Kron took third in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.61. Kron also took third in the 200 back (1:51.77) with Evan Indahl taking fourth (1:54.59) in the event.

In the 100 free, Soedel claimed the top spot with a time of 43.40, which is a pool record.

Fernandes took first in the 100 fly (49.86) with Fraser in second (50.18) and Kiraly in third (50.23).

Claiming the top spot in the 200 breast was Ganem Tabet with a time of 2:04.71 with Burton in second (2:04.82).

Kiraly, Soedel, Bloore and Fernandes teamed together to take first in the 400 free relay with time of 3:01.75.

In diving, Amanda Casillas took first in the three-meter dives with a score of 258.35 while Jacob Crayne took second in the one-meter dives with a score of 293.50.

“Amanda had a solid consistent meet that we can definitely build on. She’s already at or above the level she finished at last year. Jake did really well for five of his six dives so we just need to work a bit on the last one. He’s diving at a high level for this early in the season,’ said Utah diving coach Richard Marshner about the two divers.

The Ute women will take to the pool this Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Boise, Idaho to take on Boise State. Then both teams will take a three week break before heading to Las Vegas, Ariz. to take on Arizona and UNLV in a dual meet.
