Utah High School State Championships

PROVO, Utah, February 16. THE 2010-2011 Utah High School State Championships took place at Brigham Young University February 4-5 (3A/4A) and February 11-12 (5A).

3A Girls Results
Three swimmers doubled in with individual wins. Juan Diego Catholic's Kelsey Leeson won both the 200 free (2:00.53) and 50 free (24.59), and she anchored her team to victory in the 200 free relay (1:42.93), along with Erin Testone, Justine Connell, and Megan Stephanz. Judge Memorial Catholic's Amelia Wolfgramm matched her feat, winning the 100 free (53.34), 100 back (56.11), and anchoring the winning 400 free relay (3:46.41) consisting of Katie McMahon, Marisa Bush, and Cassandra Cokl.

Waterford's Aspen Johnson took individual wins in the 200 IM (2:14.53) and 100 breast (1:06.30). Desert Hills won the remaining three events on the program; Tessa Trimble won the 100 fly (1:03.69), Amelia Draney won the 500 free (5:29.35), and Krissia Beatty and Courtney Freed joined the aforementioned pair on the winning 200 medley relay (1:56.97).

On the back of Wolfgramm's efforts, Judge Memorial Catholic won the team title with 323.5 points, edging out Park City High (311) and Desert Hills (298), which completed the top three.

3A Boys Results
Park City's Dusty Ragland doubled up with victories in the 50 (21.61) and 100 free (47.23), the only swimmer to win more than one individual event. Meanwhile, three of his teammates also earned victories: John Howard won the 500 free (5:02.97), Hayden Peterson won the 100 back (55.82), and Zach Carfi won the 100 breast (1:03.01).

Desert Hills had an outstanding meet, with Tim Senholtz winning the 100 fly in 53.32 and leading his team to victory in two relays. John Utley, Brady Karratti, Senholtz, and Jon Goettsche won the 200 medley relay (1:41.07), while Utley, Daniel Hilton, Senholtz, and Goettshe took first in the 400 free relay (3:20.35).

Judge Memorial's Seamus Appel won the 200 free (1:49.63), while Oakley's Ben Branham grabbed the win in the 200 IM in (2:04.71). Wastach's Ben Kowallis, Troy Ogilvie, David Finley, and Paul Mair took the 200 free relay in 1:30.68.

Capitalizing on their superior depth and one relay win, Wastach won the meet with 347 points, ahead of Desert Hills (325.5) and Park City (291).

4A Girls Results
Olympus swimmers Shaylee Howard and Rachel Spencer each won two individual events and led their team to victory in two relays. Howard won the 200 free (1:55.94) and 100 free (53.36), while Spencer took the 50 free (24.56) and 100 back (58.13). The team of Howard, Laura Spencer, Rachel Spencer, and Melissa Hofmann won the 200 medley relay (1:51.95), while Howard, Emily Ference, Hofmann, and Rachel Spencer won the 400 free relay for Olympus (3:41.35).

Mountain Crest's Meghan O'Very also doubled, winning the 200 IM (2:10.21) and 100 breast. In the later event, she set a Utah 4A state record of 1:05.02, though she fell well short of Sara Nicponski's overall state record of 1:02.10. O'Very's teammate Hailey Pabst won the 500 free (5:10.60), while Orem's McKenzie Wells took the 100 fly (1:01.20).

Woods Cross roared to a win in the 200 free relay (1:43.32), and they won the state title with 311 points. Olympus ended up taking second with 262 points, ahead of Logan High School (255).

4A Boys Results
Mountain Crest won the meet with 256 points. The team had two individual winners: William Watts took the 200 free in 1:45.45, while Timmy Bates won the 50 free in 21.91. Those two, along with Sean O'Very and Jared Madsen, won the 400 free relay in 3:16.74 to secure victory.

Toole High School also has several strong performances, winning two individual events and a relay. Sklyer Smith won the 100 fly (54.13), and Casey McEachern finished ahead of the pack in the 100 back (51.91). Chase Stoddard and Tyler VonHatten joined Smith and McEachern on the victorious 200 medley relay (1:41.25).

Spanish Fork's Jesse Roberts doubled with wins in the 200 free (1:57.00) and 100 breast (1:00.22), the only swimmer at the meet to win more than one individual event. Olympus' Shawn Williams took the 500 free (4:45.34), while Springville's Shane Williams won the 100 free (48.18). Williams anchored his team to a win in the 200 free relay (1:30.59), with Ethan Wolz, Nathan Graham, and Kolby Hargett swimming the first three legs, enough to earn the team second place overall with 238 points, ahead of Lehi High School (216).

5A Girls Results
Brighton High School dominated the competition, with four individual victories and one relay win. Amanda Barrett and Kaitlyn Overstreet both doubled; Barrett won the 200 free (1:50.32) and 500 free (4:56.96), while Overstreet took the 100 fly (57.77) and 100 back (58.65). The two joined Abby Alger and Kaley Banyai to win the 200 medley relay in 1:49.03.

Skyline's Natalie Bennion won the 100 free in 53.05 before leading her team to victory in the 400 free relay (3:35.12). Christina McBride, Lillian Moore, and Sydni Johanson joined Bennion for the victory. American Fork's Jamie Nebeker won the 200 IM (2:12.23), Kearns' Ciera Marsh earned the 50 free win (23.96), and Lone Peak's Brittani Finlayson grabbed the top spot in the 100 breast (1:06.08). Alta High School won the 200 free relay (1:39.50) with Alicia May, Hailey Wilkinson, Taylor Coffey, and Hope Masters.

Brighton won the meet easily, with 369.5 points, outdistancing themselves from second-place Skyline (288.5) and third-place Alta (276).

5A Boys Results
Just as they did in the girls meet, Brighton dominated racing. Long Gutierrez led the way with two outstanding wins. In the 200 IM, his time of 1:54.07 broke the 5A state record of 1:54.66 established previously by McKay King. Gutierrez returned just two events later to win the 100 fly in 49.16, clipping the overall state record of 49.33 he set last year. Kylie Spicer from Brighton won the 500 free in 4:46.10, while Greg Ballif tied Long Peak's Connor Christiansen for the 100 breast win (1:00.27). In relay action, Gutierrez, Baliff, Spicer, and Tanner Wiest won the 200 medley relay (1:35.89), while Gutierrez, Wiest, Spicer, and Trent Evans took the 400 free relay (3:14.24).

Cottonwood's Brandton Ferrin and Kearns' Sam Huff each earned double victories. Ferrin first won the 200 free (1:42.58), while Huff took the 50 free (21.12). In an interesting twist, the two tied for the 100 free win, both clocking 47.10. Skyline's Ian Smith won the 100 fly in 53.02, while Lone Peak's Chris Nielson, Nolan Dodge, Taylor Bradshaw, and Christiansen won the 200 free relay (1:29.10).

Brighton won another comfortable victory with 338.5 points, 99 points ahead of Skyline (239.5), while Bingham earned third place (216).
