Utah Divers Garner MWC Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. November 21. UNIVERSITY of Utah divers Sterling Richards and Kelsey Patterson have been named Mountain West Conference men’s and women’s Diver of the Week, respectively. This marks the second weekly honor of the season for both divers and the second time Utah has swept both diving awards this year.

Richards, a Salt Lake City native, earns his fifth career weekly award after sweeping both diving titles against UNLV last week. Richards won the 1-meter board with a 66.10-point cushion by tallying 356.90 points, an MWC-best this season. The senior scored 316.60 points in the 3-meter event, outdistancing himself from second place by 26.20 points. Richards has won both diving events in all three meets he has competed in this season.

Patterson, an Edmonton, Alberta native, claimed both diving titles against San Diego State and UNLV over the weekend. The UNLV meet marked the third consecutive meet the junior has swept both diving events. Patterson scored 290.70 points in the 1-meter, setting the best total in the conference this season, and then won the 3-meter by an 86.25-point margin after tallying 359.62 points against San Diego State. Against UNLV, Patterson scored 283.80 points in the 1-meter and 287.30 points in the 3-meter board to win both events.

Richards and Patterson are back in action with the rest of the Utes, Dec. 1-3, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational.
