ATLANTA, Georgia, May 20. THE initial day of competition at the U.S. Masters Swimming Short Course Yard National Championships held in Atlanta, Ga., produced seven Masters national records.

Denise Brown, 50, enjoyed her move up to the women's 50-54 age division with a national record in the 1000 free. She clocked a time of 11:13.98, which chopped nearly three seconds from Laura Val's 2002 mark of 11:16.62. Celeste Miller, 60, knocked down the USMS standard in the women's 60-64 1000 free with a 12:17.18. She smashed the 12:38.75 set by Barbara Dunbar in 2009.

In the men's 1000 frees, Eric Christensen, 35, lowered the men's 35-39 record with a 9:27.97. Mike Shaffer set the previous mark with a 9:31.89 back in 2002. Keith Switzer, 47, turned in a 9:43.93 to win the men's 45-49, quicker than D Scott Wells' 2009 national mark of 9:52.53.

Nancy Steadman Martin, 55, crushed the women's 55-59 1650 free national record with a 19:20.23. That effort far surpassed the 19:32.61 set by Dunbar back in 2004. Jeff Erwin, 45, wound up destroying a national record as well with a 16:08.05 in the men's 45-49 1650 free. He wiped out the 16:22.77 set by Wells back in 2009.

Jim Clemmons, 60, also absolutely obliterated a national mark with an astonishing 17:59.55 in the men's 60-64 1650 free. He nearly cut a minute off the previous record of 18:49.29 set by James McCleery in 2007.
