USC Women Down Oregon State, 145-112

LOS ANGELES, California, October 12. JUNIOR Rachael Waller won a pair of races and was second in another, posting a pair of NCAA consideration times in the process, to help lead the USC women's swimming team to a 145-112 win over Oregon State in a Pac-10 Conference season-opening dual meet on Friday (Oct. 12) at McDonald's Swim Stadium.

Waller won the 200y free in an NCAA consideration 1:49.25 and her second-place swim in the 200y fly of 2:02.53 was also a `B' cut. Waller also won the 100y free (51.38).

Junior Rebecca Soni, the two-time defending NCAA champion in the 200y breast, won the race Friday in an NCAA consideration 2:16.79. She was also second in the 400y IM (4:28.25) and third in an unusual event for her, the 1000y free (10:28.33).

Senior Brittany Allen took first in the 1000y free in 10:11.40 while senior teammate and fellow distance stalwart Whitney Hentzen won the 500y free in 4:53.75, another NCAA consideration time.

Other winners for the Trojans on Friday were sophomore Whitney Stephenson in the 100y back (57.72), junior Katy Houston in the 100y breast (1:04.31), junior Kristen Lahey in the 50y free (23.84) and senior Emily Goetsch in the 100y fly (56.22).

Oregon State, under fourth-year head coach and former eight-year USC assistant coach Larry Liebowitz, featured wins by junior Saori Haruguchi in the 200y fly (2:00.50, `B' cut) and 400y IM (4:21.24, `B' cut) and sophomore Nicole Pressprich in the 200y back.
