USC Claims Victory at Southern California Water Polo Tournament

IRVINE, Calif., September 23. SHOWING some early-season power, the University of Southern California came away with the championship at last week’s Southern California Water Polo Tournament. The Trojans, now ranked No. 1 in the country, claimed a 6-5 victory over Stanford in the title match. The 16-team tournament featured the top four squads in the nation – UCLA, California, USC and Stanford.

Southern Cal defeated Cal in the semifinals while Stanford edged UCLA in the same round. In the third-place match, California earned an overtime triumph over UCLA. In winning the tournament, USC remained undefeated in five matches. In the final, Juan Delgadillo scored the game-winning goal with 3:37 remaining.

Juraj Zatovic was the only multi-goal scorer for the Trojans, as he tallied twice. Tommy Corcoran, Joe Cosentino, Pavol Valovic and Delgadillo scored once each. Adam Schilling was credited with four saves for USC. Peter Varellas scored twice for Stanford and Sandy Hohener registered five saves.
