USA’s Cesilie Carlton Wins First High Diving World Title

BARCELONA, Spain, July 30. USA’s Cesilie Carlton made history today by becoming the first FINA world champion in high diving during the daredevil event held at the FINA World Championships.

Carlton completed the three-round competition with a score of 211.60 for victory, while USA’s Ginger Huber (206.70) and Germany’s Anna Bader (203.90) rounded out the podium in the event.

This year, FINA debuted high diving as part of its World Championships, capitalizing off the huge popularity of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. Today, Carlton led the women with a victory as diving took place from an epic 20-meter tall platform in the port of Barcelona.

Carlton has had plenty of experience with these types of death-defying dives as a performer at Sea World in San Diego. Although, her top height in Southern California is seven-meters, which to an up-close spectator already looks incredibly high.

USA legend Greg Louganis, who served as a judge on day one during opening rounds for the men, definitely had an enjoyable time today watching the women compete.

“High Diving is different, it represents a free spirit, it’s an extreme sport,” Louganis said. “It surely has its place at these World Championships.”
