USA Women’s Water Polo Opens FINA World League Super Final With 10-6 Win Over China

CHANGSHU, China, May 29. THE U.S. Olympic Women's Water Polo Team opened played at the FINA World League Super Final with a 10-6 win over China. Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA/Stanford/Olympic Club), Melissa Seidemann (Walnut Creek, CA/Stanford/Stanford/) and Lauren Wenger (Long Beach, CA/USC/NYAC) all scored twice to pace the offense while Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI/Michigan/NYAC) posted nine saves in the cage. Team USA, winners of Gold at the last three FINA World League Super Finals, take on Greece on Wednesday.

It was a high scoring affair to begin, as both teams tallied three goals in the opening period to be even 3-3 after the first. China surged ahead in the second period, outscoring the Americans 2-0, to build a 5-3 lead at halftime. The second half belonged to the United States as they dominated China, outscoring the Chinese 4-1 in the third to claim a 7-6 lead after three periods. In the fourth Team USA put the match away posting three more goals and keeping China off the board to grab a 10-6 win.

Other scorers for the United States included a goal each from Kami Craig (Santa Barbara, CA/USC/Santa Barbara), Annika Dries (Laguna Beach, CA/Stanford/SET), Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Stanford/Diablo), and Heather Petri (Orinda, CA/California/NYAC). The United States went 2/4 on power plays while China was 3/10, neither team attempted a penalty shot.

“We were very disorganized and chaotic in the first half. But I was very happy with how disciplined and organized we played in the second half,” said Adam Krikorian, USA Head Coach.
